QR Labels on Food Products: Cost, Printing and What to Put on Them
The practical side of food QR labels — what they cost in India, printing options, label content rules, and the mistakes that make a traceability QR useless.
The traceability conversation is strategic until it hits the label printer. Then it's: What size? What cost? Who prints? Does it survive the cold chain? And — the quiet one that kills campaigns — what exactly should the QR say around it so anyone scans it at all?

What a traceability QR costs in India
The QR itself is free — it encodes a URL your platform generates per batch. What you pay for is labels:
- Printed stickers (paper, standard adhesive): roughly ₹0.5–2 per label at moderate volumes from local printers or online label services — the dominant choice for jars, pouches, cartons.
- Synthetic/waterproof (polyester/PVC variants): roughly ₹1.5–4 per label — needed for cold-chain, wet market, or outdoor-exposed goods.
- Print-at-home (thermal/adhesive sheets): negligible per-label cost, zero lead time — right for small lots, pilots, and per-batch crate tags.
- Integrated into the main packaging print: marginal cost near zero — but only works when the QR can be batch-specific, which means variable digital printing on the packaging run, not a static litho plate.
Volume bends the curve: sticker pricing falls fast past ~10k units. For small sellers, print-at-home on demand is underrated — every batch gets fresh labels without inventory.

What goes on the label — the content rules
A traceability label has more jobs than the QR:
Mandatory (FSSAI) elements sit on the primary label and aren't optional: product name, ingredients, net quantity, FSSAI license number, lot/batch code, date marking, manufacturer details, nutritional panel — per the current labelling regulations. The QR doesn't replace any of these; it adds the story layer.
The QR's escort text decides scan rates. A naked QR gets fraction-of-a-percent scans. Add a call-to-action line: "Scan to see this batch's farm story" / "Scan to verify your turmeric's origin." Tell people what they get. Placement: front-of-pack or back-panel hero — not tucked into the crimp seal.
The batch identity printed as text next to the QR ("Batch TR-2026-0814") matters more than it seems: it links the physical label to the trace page even when scanning is impossible (damaged code, screenshot, reference in an email).
Design rules that survive contact with reality
- Minimum printed size ~2×2 cm (bigger for retail shelves). Smaller codes fail on curved jars and cheap phone cameras.
- Contrast: dark code on light background. QRs over product photography look great in mockups and fail on shelf.
- Quiet zone: keep the mandatory blank margin around the code; designers love infringing it.
- Error correction at level M or higher — the code survives scuffs.
- Short, stable URLs. The QR encodes a per-batch URL on your trace domain — it must resolve forever. A dead QR on a pack is worse than none; a redirecting trace domain protects against platform changes.
- Test on the actual surface — curved glass, textured pouch, kraft paper — with a mid-range phone, before the print run.
The mistakes that make QRs useless
- A QR to a homepage. Scanners land on a marketing page, learn nothing about this batch, never scan again. The QR must resolve to the batch's own trace page.
- Static codes for all batches. One QR for the whole product line means no lot story — you've printed a menu link, not a trace.
- Dead links after a season. Trace pages that vanish when a vendor changes break every pack still in market. Permanence is a requirement, not a feature.
- No call to action. The code without an invitation is decoration.
- Unscannable placement/finish — gloss lamination glare, crimp-seam curvature, cold-chain condensation.
The workflow that works
- Register the batch in your trace system → get the batch page + QR.
- Print labels (on-demand for small lots; bulk for scale).
- Apply at packing — the printed batch code and the trace page agree by construction.
- The pack now carries: mandatory label + batch code + QR with a promise ("scan for this batch's story").
- Every scan lands on the farm story, photos, dates, verification — and the buyer trust compounds.
Label economics never killed a traceability project; bad label design kills them daily. Print the promise next to the code, keep the URL alive, test on the real surface — the rest is sticker arithmetic.
